- ☐ Dry scooping: large pasta shapes between two bowls with a big spoon
- ☐ Sink-or-bucket 'washing up': plastic cups and a soft brush in shallow water
- ☐ Ice-cube rescue: freeze small toys in a tub of ice; toddler chips them free with a spoon (supervise closely)
Post, stack & sort

- ☐ Stack-and-crash towers: blocks, boxes or cushions, built to be knocked down
- ☐ Lid matching: a pile of jars and lids to pair up
- ☐ Ball drop: balls rolled down a cardboard ramp into a basket
Move & carry
- ☐ Delivery toddler: a small bag and 'jobs' — carry this sock to the basket
- ☐ Cushion mountain: sofa cushions on the floor for climbing and rolling
- ☐ Dance-freeze: music on, dance; music off, freeze in a silly shape
- ☐ Push-along parade: a box on a string, pulled around the room collecting treasures
Words & quiet time
- ☐ Basket of real objects to name: spoon, brush, ball, cup — say the word, let them fetch it
- ☐ Lift-the-flap and touchy-feely board books, on repeat
- ☐ Sticker dots on paper: peeling is the point, the picture is a bonus
One rainy afternoon, using three of these
Start with the posting box while you make a drink (10 minutes of focus). Move to cushion mountain to burn energy before lunch (10 minutes). Finish with water pouring on a towel after lunch (15 minutes, and the towel does the cleaning). Three activities, one towel, no purchases.

Mistakes to skip
- Activities with twenty pieces — setup eats the play. Three to five objects is the sweet spot.
- Expecting Pinterest-perfect attention spans: 5–15 minutes per activity is a win at this age.
- Skipping supervision on water, ice and small objects — these are together-activities, always.
- Rotating nothing: the same activity three days later feels brand new to a 14-month-old. Repeat freely.
Questions parents ask
How many activities should a 12–18 month old do a day?
Two or three short invitations to play is plenty. The rest of the day — eating, walking, watching, pottering — is learning too.
My toddler only plays for five minutes. Is that normal?
Completely. Attention at this age is measured in minutes. Short, repeated and simple beats long and elaborate.
Do I need special Montessori supplies?
No. The activities above use kitchen and household basics. If you later buy anything, open-ended basics (blocks, balls, cups) outlast every gadget.
What if my toddler just throws everything?
Throwing is a stage of learning trajectory and cause-and-effect. Give throwing a home: soft balls into a basket, every day, and redirect the rest.
