Third Trimester Checklist by Week (28–40)
Weeks 28–32 — buy & book
- ☐ Finish the registry; use completion discounts for what is left
- ☐ Order the car seat and practise installing it
- ☐ Wash baby clothes and bedding (gentle detergent)
- ☐ Stock the freezer: 7–10 easy meals, labelled
- ☐ Confirm who is your support contact tree — who gets the first message, who feeds the pet
- ☐ Tour the hospital/birth centre if you have not yet
Weeks 33–36 — pack & prepare
- ☐ Pack the three hospital bags (labour, recovery, baby)
- ☐ Set up the sleep space and changing station at home
- ☐ Charge and pack the power bank; print paperwork copies
- ☐ Prepare a postpartum recovery station: pads, wipes, snacks, water, charger, in arm's reach of your rest spot
- ☐ Confirm childcare/pet cover for any older children or animals
- ☐ Install the car seat for real and have it checked if your area offers checks
Weeks 37–40 — rest & be ready
- ☐ Keep bags by the door and the car fuelled
- ☐ Daily kick-count awareness as your own care team advises (follow their guidance, not the internet's)
- ☐ Rest like it is your job — because right now it is
- ☐ One small joy a day: a walk, a favourite meal, a film
- ☐ Know your hospital's 'when to come in' instructions by heart — from your care team
A calm week-36 evening, step by step
Bags zipped by the door (20 minutes). Car seat clicked in and checked (20 minutes). Freezer list taped to the fridge so anyone can reheat for you (5 minutes). Postpartum station basket filled (15 minutes). That single hour is the difference between a scramble and a sigh of relief when the day comes.

Mistakes to skip
- Leaving the car seat to the day you come home — install and practise early.
- Spending weeks 37+ on big projects (nursery painting marathons) instead of rest.
- Keeping every task in your head — a written checklist your partner can also run is the whole point of this page.
- Comparing your pace to anyone else's. Your only deadline is your own due window.
Questions parents ask
What if I reach 40 weeks with things undone?
Almost everyone does. The true essentials are tiny: a safe sleep space, a car seat, diapers, a few clothes, and your hospital bag. Everything else can arrive after the baby does.
When should the nursery be finished?
It does not need to be 'finished' at all — babies mostly need a sleep space near you at first. A changing spot and a clothes drawer complete the real list.
How much freezer food should I prepare?
Seven to ten meals is the sweet spot: enough for the hardest first days, not so much that it becomes its own project.
Is it normal to feel unprepared in the third trimester?
Completely. Preparation is a list, not a feeling — work the list week by week and let the feeling catch up.
