Newborn Essentials: The Only 32 Things You Need (0–3 Months)

The quick answer: Thirty-two things. That is the whole list: 6 for sleep, 6 for feeding, 8 for changing and clothing, 5 for going out, 7 for bath and basics. Everything else is a 'later, if you want it' — not an essential.

What 32 items cost, honestly

Buying everything new at sensible prices: roughly $520–$900, with the car seat and sleep space as half of it. Borrow or buy second-hand for the bassinet, stroller and tub (never second-hand for a car seat or mattress) and the same list lands nearer $300–$450.

Questions parents ask

What do newborns actually need in the first week?

A safe sleep space, diapers and wipes, a few clothes, feeding supplies, and a car seat to come home in. The full 32 covers the first three months, not just week one.

How many clothes does a newborn need?

About 10–12 outfits total in rotation covers laundry every two to three days. More is storage, not necessity.

Can I buy newborn essentials second-hand?

Mostly yes — clothes, strollers, tubs and bassinets wash and work fine. The two exceptions: always buy the car seat and the mattress new.

What can I safely skip until later?

Shoes, toys beyond one soft item, a full nursery set, and any gadget whose job a cloth already does.
